Since 1898, The Grand Tavern has been a cornerstone of Te Aroha’s community life. From its early days as a friendly local pub to becoming the town’s favourite spot for sports, live events, and gatherings, our tavern’s history is filled with good times and great people.
Founded in 1898 during Te Aroha’s bustling gold rush, The Grand Tavern quickly became the go-to spot for miners, travellers, and locals. With the community thriving, the tavern expanded in the 1920s, adding more space and services to meet the needs of a growing clientele.
By the 1950s, The Grand Tavern had become a cultural and social hub, hosting live music and community events that brought Te Aroha together. In 1981, due to recurring floods, the historic building was carefully relocated to higher ground, preserving its heritage and securing its future.
While undergoing maintenance in 2013, a hidden cellar filled with early 20th-century artefacts was discovered beneath the tavern. This unexpected find shed light on a fascinating part of its past, revealing treasures that connected today’s tavern to its original days.
Under new family ownership in 2022, The Grand Tavern embarked on a revitalisation journey, blending its Victorian charm with modern comforts. Today, it remains a cherished landmark where history meets hospitality, welcoming both locals and travellers for good food, drinks, and great company.
